It is a society of writers and scholars on matters pertaining to German language and literature in the German ''sprachraum''. ==Literary awards== Since 1951 it has awarded the Georg Büchner Prize, the most important literary prize in the German language. Another prize, the Sigmund Freud Prize, was installed in memory of Sigmund Freud in 1964. That same year, the annual ''Friedrich-Gundolf-Preis'' was installed for the intermediation of German culture in foreign countries, in memory of Friedrich Gundolf.
